Can I accommodate my course schedule to my needs?
Yes! Our wide variety of class times during days, evenings and weekends as well as the fact that we offer classes online means you can make Strayer University's schedule work with you life. The ultimate flexibility is demonstrated by our asynchronous online classes that let you attend classes via the Internet any time, day or night.
Does Strayer University offer classes online?
All of Strayer University's degree programs can be completed online. Online classes are offered in two formats, synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous classes are real-time, live-chat sessions that are scheduled once per week at a set time. Asynchronous classes are taken at any time convenient to you; however, you must log on at least once per week.
What if I want to take classes both at a campus and online?
Students have an option to register for courses either online, at a nearest Brick &Mortar campus, and/or both. The choice is dependent on a students' schedule and learning preferences.
It is important to note that regardless of where a student completes their courses, each student will have a "Home Campus'. The home campus is the campus where a student is first enrolled into the University. The home campus will house student files and will assist students with administrative requirements (Financial Aid, Transcripts requests, course withdrawal etc.) as well as process course registration and payment for classes. Therefore, it is very important that students know their home campus and get in touch with your home campus staff whenever needed.
What are the course requirements?
Strayer University's online courses have the same academic requirements as the courses taught in a classroom setting with regard to course objectives, assignments and attendance. For an online course, you must have access and working knowledge of a computer, a modem and an Internet Service Provider. Students will need to understand how online classes are conducted. Students may obtain this knowledge by attending a New Student Orientation in addition to completing an online tutorial offered through Strayer University Online (www.online.strayer.edu).
Do online classes cost the same as campus classes?
Yes. All classes are offered at the same cost, whether in the classroom, online, and regardless of campus.
When do Strayer University Online courses meet?
Strayer Online offers courses in two formats: asynchronous and synchronous.
Classes conducted in the asynchronous platform are available for students to log into 24 hours and 7 days a week. Although students are required to log in one time each week in order for attendance to post as present; students may need to log in multiple times in order to successfully complete the course.
Classes conducted in the synchronous platform meet weekly at a regularly scheduled day and time. Students are required to log into the live session in order to meet the attendance requirement. Attendance and participation in class discussion are considered important for your success.
What is the participation policy of an online asynchronous class?
Asynchronous courses are designed to fit student's lives by giving them flexibility to login during each week at a time that is most convenient. Thorough research and analysis suggests that students who login and participate in their online courses frequently are more likely to successfully complete an online course. It is recommended that you login at the beginning of the week, review and understand the weekly requirements and due dates in order to meet the weekly expectations. Additionally, it is recommended that students participate in threaded discussions early in the week in order to engage in meaningful discussions with classmates and the professor.
Students are marked as "Present" in an asynchronous class by simply accessing the course once during the scheduled week; however, it is important that students understand that merely being marked "Present" in an online class does not guarantee that students will successfully pass a course. In addition to attendance, there are other requirements to be fulfilled. Requirements may include but are not limited to weekly assignments, participation, research papers, quizzes etc. which vary with the course and instructor. The successful completion of all the required participation items and assessments will determine the student's final grade in the course. Therefore, it is in the student's best interest to play an active role in accessing his/her online class, as often as possible, and fulfilling the necessary requirements for each week as described in the instructor's syllabus.
Students who are absent for four consecutive weeks will be administratively withdrawn from class. See catalog for academic and financial penalties.
What is the participation policy of an online synchronous class?
Synchronous courses meet weekly on a scheduled day and time. Students are required to log into the class at the scheduled day and time in order to be marked "present". Thorough research and analysis suggests that students who participate frequently are more likely to successfully complete an online course.
It is important that students understand that merely being marked "Present" in an online class does not guarantee that students will successfully pass a course. In addition to attendance, there are other requirements to be fulfilled. Therefore, it is in the student's best interest to play an active role in accessing his/her online class, as often as possible, and fulfilling the necessary requirements for each week as described in the instructor's syllabus.
Students who may need to be absent from the live class will have the ability to access archived classes. Accessing archived courses will allow students to review the material discussed in order to complete assignments and the course but does not meet the attendance requirement.
Students who are absent for four consecutive weeks will be administratively withdrawn from the class. See catalog for academic and financial penalties.
Am I limited as to where I may log into class?
Both asynchronous and synchronous classes offer the convenience of accessing class from home, or wherever a student has Internet access. However, students should be aware that all computers may be set up differently, have limitations dependant on the internet service and may experience technical issues with public computers (work, library etc.) that may have fire walls and security programs in place.
What makes Strayer University different than a traditional college or university?
Strayer differs by providing classes at times and in modes that are more convenient to the working adult. That is, we provide courses mainly in the evenings, weekends and online. Strayer courses are conducted on a quarter system in which allows students to complete courses four times a year which provides an opportunity for students to earn more credits/year than a traditional college.
How long will it take me to graduate?
The time it will take to earn a degree will vary for each student and will depend on the type of degree the student has declared. Yes, Strayer University Online will enable you to fit school into your busy life and offer the opportunity to earn a degree in a lot less time than a traditional University and suggests asking yourself these questions, and possibly working your way from registering for 1-2 classes per quarter to perhaps 3-4 depending on the mentioned factors.
The time it takes to earn a degree will depend on various factors:
- Time It will depend on how much time students can make available in order to attend, participate and study for classes depending on their work schedule, family life and dependents, or extra curricular activities outside of work and family. This will ultimately dictate how many classes students are able to take per quarter. Although students want to earn their degree as quickly as possible, it's important that for students to be realistic as to how many classes they are able to handle while taken care of all other responsibilities. Also, students want do well and be successful in class.
- Money Each student may have limited funds on a yearly basis in which may dictate how many classes the student is able to register for each quarter. This will ultimately play a key factor in the completion time of your degree.
- Transfer credits Each student enrolling at Strayer Online may have different previous college experience that may offer the opportunity to transfer credits into programs at Strayer University. This will also play a key factor as to how long it may take to complete a degree program.
- Additional Credit For undergraduate programs only, Strayer offers other means of earning credit toward your degree program that may ultimately shorten the time it takes to earn a degree, if appropriate to the individual student. These include: CLEP exams, Dante's exams, Challenge exams, Petitioning for Work/Life Experience, and Military transcripts.
In general, a bachelor's degree student who has transferred to Strayer University with an associate's degree (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits), who does not earn any additional credits through CLEP or challenge exams, and who takes 2 courses per quarter can complete a bachelor's degree in 9 quarters (2 years and 3 months) with no quarters taken "off."
In general, graduate students with no transfer credits will typically complete their program in 6 quarters, or 1-1/2 years, taking 2 courses per quarter and no quarters off.

Before beginning the graduation application process all students must be enrolled in their final courses and have fulfilled all financial commitments to the University. Students who meet these requirements should complete the graduation application online at strayer.edu/graduation. Those interested in participating in a commencement ceremony must first complete the graduation application online.
Additional commencement information can be found at www.strayer.edu/graduation.
What types of financial assistance are available from the University?
Strayer University offers programs to students who are unable to attend college without financial assistance. Strayer University is eligible to participate in the awarding of Title IV Federal Assistance programs. Strayer University offers three categories of financial aid: grants, loans and scholarships. Federal financial aid is available in the form of grants and loans for undergraduate students who qualify and as loans for graduate students who qualify. The University also offers a private loan through Sallie Mae called the Signature Loan. The Signature Loan provides an alternative and convenient way to finance tuition. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the Business Office at each campus or on the Strayer University Student web site (http://studentserver.strayer.edu).
I am reimbursed from my company upon completion of the class. What can I present my employer that will allow me to receive my reimbursement?
Upon completion of the quarter, the Business Office can provide you with an "Invoice for Reimbursement". The invoice will list the class(es) you have completed, the grade for each class, the cost of each class, the book charges (if applicable) and the amount paid for each class. The invoice is for the sole purpose of providing to your employer for reimbursement and not intended to be a statement of account.
How do I change the information (address, phone, e-mail etc.) on my account?
A change of status form can be found at online.strayer.edu under "Forms". Complete the form and return to the Business Office in person or by mail or fax.
How do I purchase my books?
Textbooks and supplementary materials may be ordered from MBS Direct by Internet, phone, mail or fax. Orders are shipped within 24 hours. Order forms and detailed information can be found at http://studentserver.strayer.edu. Click on "virtual bookstore".
What is financial need and how is it determined?
Need-based financial aid is available to students who demonstrate a need for additional resources to help pay college costs. Financial need is derived from subtracting your expected family contribution from the total cost of attendance.
Cost of Attendance
- Expected Family Contribution
= Demonstrated Financial Need
Financial need is the maximum amount we are permitted by Federal regulations to award you in Loans and Grants.
What are eligibility requirements for financial aid?
To be eligible, you must:
- Be accepted for admission
- Be enrolled in an eligible academic program on at least a half time basis
- Be in good academic standing
- For most programs, demonstrate financial need
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- Certify compliance with Selective Service Registration requirements
- Not be in default on any loan or owe a refund on any grant made under any Title IV program
- Have a social security number; and
- Have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent
Can I apply for a Federal Pell Grant?
Yes. When you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you are applying for funding from the Federal Pell Grant program and submitting information to determine your eligibility for other federal and state grant, loan, and scholarship programs. Generally, a grant is money you do not have to repay.
Does Strayer University offer a military scholarship?
We are pleased to offer a military scholarship for active duty military personnel to supplement the military tuition assistance program. Information on the scholarship can be found at www.strayer.edu/military.
Is Strayer University approved for VA Benefits?
Yes. You many choose to send your VA Benefits application directly to Strayer University, mail your application directly to the VA or apply online at www.va.gov. It takes approximately 60-90 days for VA processing; therefore the student is responsible for tuition payments to the University. VA checks are sent directly to the student.
Will scholarships and other resources impact my other financial aid awards?
Scholarships and other resources that help students with their educational expenses are used in calculating eligibility for federal aid. Common types of resources are scholarships, veteran's benefits, employer tuition reimbursements, vocational rehabilitation awards, etc. The demonstrated financial need (as determined through a processed FAFSA) to meet education costs is reduced as a result of these scholarships and other resources. They do not replace the expected family contribution (EFC) per federal regulation.
Upon receipt of scholarships and other resources, the amount of a federal aid award (with the exception of the Pell Grant) may be reduced or canceled if the Financial Aid Office did not have knowledge of the scholarship or resource at the time of the initial award.
How will I be notified after I have done my FAFSA or FAFSA corrections?
Students who provide a valid e-mail address on their FAFSA will be sent e-mails that contain a secure link to their SAR (Student Aid Report) information on the Web. Students can see all of their application processing results, including their EFC, database match results and all SAR comments associated with the transaction. Students can access their SAR information on the Web an unlimited number of times. Students who do not provide an e-mail address will be mailed their SAR in 7 to 10 days.
Can I lose my eligibility for financial aid because of a low G.P.A. or too few credits?
Students are expected to complete (get a passing grade in) a minimum number of credits each year and to maintain a minimum grade point average to be eligible for aid. Students who have been declared "suspended" for future aid due to unsatisfactory academic progress may appeal in an attempt to reestablish financial aid eligibility. Additional information on Satisfactory Academic Progress and Financial Aid can be found in the Student Handbook found at studentserver.strayer.edu.
Students whose academic load drops below half-time (less than 9 credits per quarter for undergraduates) will lose their eligibility to receive Federal funds for that quarter. Note that in-school deferment on outstanding student loans ends and the loan repayment grace period begins retroactively to the last date of enrollment of at least half-time status. Contact the Business Office for more information and procedures.
My mother and father don't support me; can I be considered an independent student?
In order to be considered an independent student, the student must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be at least 24 years of age before January 1 of the academic year for which you are applying,
- Be an orphan or ward of the court,
- Have a child/children for whom you provide more than half their financial support,
- Be a married student,
- Be a veteran of the armed forces,
- Be a graduate student, or
- Have a legal dependent other than a spouse or child.
Students who do not fit into the federal definition are required to supply parental information and signatures if they want to apply for federal aid.
I will be getting married. How should I fill out my FAFSA?
The FAFSA requires that students indicate their current marital status as of the date the FAFSA is completed. If a student is not married as of the date the FAFSA is filed, the student must file as single. Once an application has been submitted, the marital status can not be changed.
When will I repay my Federal Student Loans?
In most cases, repayment of your loans begin six months after you graduate, withdraw from school or drop below half-time status. Please refer to the policies of the lender you have chosen.
What do I need to do to apply for aid?
You must be accepted for admission and you must complete a Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) in order to apply for aid. Information on applying for Financial Aid at Strayer University can be found at the Virtual Financial Aid site at http://www.strayer.edu/financial_support.
My parents are divorced. Who should fill out the form?
Students should report information on their FAFSA about the parent they lived with the most during year. If a student did not live with one parent more than the other, the student should use the parent who has given them more financial support (including money, gifts, loans, housing, food, clothes, car, etc.) during the most recent year in which support was provided. If the parent whose information is reported has remarried, the student must also include the step-parent's income information.
What does it mean if my file has been selected for verification?
Because students sometimes make significant errors when reporting application information, the federal government has incorporated a verification process as part of the student financial aid program requirements. The school is required to follow up to verify that the information submitted by the student (and/or parents) is accurate and to make any necessary corrections before proceeding further with the application.
When a student is selected, the school will contact the student asking for a copy of the relevant tax forms (for the prior year) and for the completion of a verification worksheet, which will provide additional corroborating information (such as names and ages of family members and non-taxable income items). Any required signatures, such as signatures on worksheets or on copies of tax returns, must be collected at the time of verification, during the applicable award year. Once the school completes the verification process and makes any necessary corrections, the aid application can be advanced, aid eligibility determined, and an award made to the student.
I can only attend part-time. Can I still get financial aid?
In order to be eligible for aid, you must be registered at least half-time (9 credits undergraduate, 4.5 credits graduate) each quarter. If you are eligible for a PELL Grant, you may be eligible for a small portion of that grant even if you enroll less than half-time.
What happens if I get more financial aid than my tuition costs?
When calculating your financial need, the formula takes into consideration tuition, fees, books and supplies, transportation and personal miscellaneous expenses. Once your tuition, books and fees are paid, excess funds will be mailed to you. These funds are available for your other educational expenses.
How will my Veteran's benefits affect my aid?
Veteran's benefits are considered a resource, and need to be taken into consideration when other forms of aid are received. Your cost of attendance, less your EFC, equals your financial need. Veteran's benefits plus any aid offered, including grants and loans, may not exceed your financial need.
Do I have to complete a new application every year?
You must complete a FAFSA each year if you wish to receive financial aid. After the first year of completing a FAFSA, you may submit a Renewal Application. You are asked to update key data elements for each year you wish to apply for aid. Your initial application will generate a PIN number that will allow you to update your information on the Internet.
Why do I need a Federal PIN?
The U.S. Department of Education issues PINs to FAFSA filers to allow students greater access to the department's systems. Your PIN can be used as an electronic signature when signing your FAFSA on the web or correcting your Student Aid Report via the web. It allows you access to the Renewal FAFSA on the web, as well as your records on the National Student Loan Data System, and can be used to electronically sign your Master Promissory Note for federal loans. PINs will be mailed to all applicants who have signed their FAFSA and successfully matched the Social Security Administration database. To expedite processing of FAFSA applications, both the student and parent should obtain a PIN at: http://www.pin.ed.gov.
What is the difference between subsidized & unsubsidized loans?
Subsidized Stafford Loans are based on financial need. The government will pay the interest to the lender on this loan while you are in school at least half-time, as well as during a six-month grace and any deferment periods.
Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are a non-need based form of aid. Borrowers are responsible for all interest accrued on the loan. Interest payments can be deferred until graduation and will then be capitalized and added to the principal of the loan or you can make payments on interest while in school.
